 Rug making is a relaxing hobby which is growing in popularity. The pleasure of seeing something you have made with your own hands and knowing that it is something useful that will last a life time is extremely rewarding.

There are quite a few ways of making rugs; some of these Rug Making styles are: Latch Hook, Hooking, Locker Hooking, Prodded Rugs, Braided Rugs, Appliqué Rugs, Knitted Rugs, Crocheted Rugs and Woven Rugs.

Here we will deal mainly with three styles of Rug Making. These are Latch Hook Rugs, Rug Hooking and Locker Hooking. These are probably the most popular forms of rug making. I personally prefer to make Latch Hook Rugs.

These three styles of rug making are easy to learn and fun to do. You can work on your rug while you are watching television, listening to your favourite music or relaxing in the sunshine. If you are involving your children then Latch Hook Rugs would be the easiest, whilst giving them a great sense of achievement.

Families can work on a rug together and share the satisfaction of having created something beautiful. When I was young my father designed a Latch Hook Rug and we all (my father, mother, brother and myself) worked on the making of this rug. It was a large rug and so two of us could work on it at the same time.

Rug Making, in one way or another has been going on for centuries, in fact it is believed that the Vikings practiced a form of rug making. Rug making in the early days was for practical purposes to put something warm on the floor or bed. Today Rug Making whilst still practical is an art form and the design of your rug is only limited by your imagination.

When buying a ready made rug you are limited to the colours and designs available on the market. When you make and design your own you can use whatever colours you please, even going as far as dying your own wool, if you feel so inclined. The design itself can be anything you want; it can be something you have drawn or it can be taken from your favourite photo. Even if you buy canvas with the design already imprinted on it you can still individualise your rug by choosing your own colours.
